STEM CELL THERAPY FOR CORNEAL REGENERATION REACHES CLINICAL TRIALS STAGE
As the outer layer of protection for the eye, the cornea must constantly regenerate to maintain a clean surface. Loss of cornea-regenerating stem cells leads to clouding, like trying to see through a constantly dirty window. Now researchers at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute (HSCI) have developed a therapy to replace corneal-generating stem cells and restore vision, and tested it for the first time in a patient. “The idea that you can regenerate an organ using stem cells has been around for a long time,” says Natasha Frank, MD. – so far this has worked very well for blood stem cells, but the cornea is the first hard organ where possible. Isolation of stem cells Around the cornea is a dark rim of tissue called the limbus, which contains stem cells that regenerate the cornea. Healthy limbic tissue from this rim can be transplanted into an eye that lacks stem cells, but this approach has serious limitations. “If only one eye is damaged – for example, due to infection or a burn – you can take part of the limbus from the healthy eye and transplant it into the damaged eye,” said Natasha Frank. “But you’re limited in how much tissue you can take before compromising vision in a healthy eye, so very few stem cells actually get transplanted. Ready therapy. To bring the therapy to patients, HSCI researchers are collaborating with Rheacell in a clinical trial. The treatment process includes taking limbic tissue from a donor, isolating ABCB5-positive cells, culturing cells to increase their number, and transplanting purified cells into patients with stem cell deficiencies.
EURASIAN ORTHOPEDIC FORUM 2019
On June 28 and 29, 2019, the General Director of UMVITA Corporation Ksenia Safonova took part in the work of the Eurasian Orthopedic Forum – 2019, negotiations were held with leading experts in the field, partners, a project for the introduction of implantable medical devices into the registry was discussed, she exchanged experience with partners, got acquainted with new medical products. Our state centers, hospitals, and hospitals are equipped with the most modern medical equipment and products, many enterprises have been opened for the production of Russian equipment in quality better than their Western counterparts. At the same time, for some unknown reason, the Russian manufacturer is charged 20% VAT for products manufactured in Russia, most likely a flaw in the company’s employees who are responsible and lobbying for this issue, since 500 million rubles for marketing of manufactured products is extremely overstated spending. A new company from RUSNANO has appeared, which deals with 3D printing, the office of the company is based in St. Petersburg. In Russia, the Shvabe concern has manufactured a whole line of medical equipment, anesthesia and respiratory apparatus, ventilators, CPAP apparatus, which is very pleasing, the best foreign tomographs have already been installed in TsKB, GKB 67 and GKB 36. Telemedicine is superbly established in the military-industrial complex. While there are not enough medical helicopters and aircraft for Russia, the issue of equipping and manning Russian medical helicopters and aircraft is being resolved. The work of the production site is being established at CITO. In November 2019, Walderlmak Link plans to open a representative office in Moscow. The production of Russian products for neonatology and microscopes has been established in the Urals. The work of the Export Center has been established, which allows you to import components for imported equipment under special conditions. A Government Decree on preferences for Russian manufacturers was signed, the question was raised that manufacturers do not consult with leading experts in the field, and then bring doctors products that are incorrectly formatted. The opening of simulation centers on the basis of universities and hospitals is developing. There is an insufficient number of inter-municipal centers for children in the Russian Federation. Work is underway on osteogenesis, restoration of cartilage tissue, antimicrobial coatings, the growth of bone tissue and tendons. The question was raised that the association of specialists should work actively, not break up into its own groups, but together and jointly solve pressing issues. A new delegate from Russia to SICOT has been appointed Alexander Gubin, chief freelance orthopedist of the Ural Federal District. In Russia, a register of implantable devices is needed, which is maintained only by Tikhilov Rashid Director of the Research Institute of Vredena, this strategic document is necessary for everyone, both patients and manufacturers, and doctors, and government agencies, manufacturers also propose to include the modeling of operations in the national register, which will also be convenient and doctors and manufacturers and patients. Wonderful dogs were presented at the Forum, this therapy in combination with concerts, proper nutrition and medical procedures will be great for both children and adults. There is something to work on, where to strive, what to improve! 🙂

MOSCOW SURGEONS OF THE MOROZOV HOSPITAL SAVED A CHILD’S LIFE WITH THE HELP OF A 3D PRINTER
The child was observed in Russia and abroad, but only professional surgeons at the Morozov hospital helped the child. The child’s parents complained of exertional dyspnea and frequent obstructive bronchitis. The child’s lung was examined, his model was printed on a 3D printer and a problem was found – the vessels intertwined so that they formed a kind of noose and squeezed one of the bronchi. In medicine, there was only one such case. The doctors dissected the ligament and eliminated the compression, the baby is already at home and is on the mend.
A ROBOT AT THE SERVICE OF A TRAUMATOLOGIST!
In Moscow, a robot has appeared in the clinical practice of a traumatologist. The new unique robot is designed to perform arthroplasty. Robot traumatologist is a high-tech surgical active robotic complex. The essence of the work lies in the fact that the resection of the articular surfaces for the installation of the components of the endoprosthesis is performed in a fully automatic mode, based on a pre-compiled program for a specific patient. The innovative technology makes it possible to fully and completely implement a personalized approach to performing the arthroplasty, excluding possible positional errors in the installation of components, which ultimately affects the stability and service life of the endoprosthesis. The first robot has been installed in a Moscow clinic. You can take training in the use of the robot in operations both in Russia and abroad.
CYBER-PROSTHESIS HANDS CREATED IN RUSSIA
In Russia, young specialists have created a bionic hand prosthesis capable of “reading” the wishes of its owner and performing many complex actions. Now the product is undergoing certification and is being prepared for industrial production. The prosthesis turned out to be visually attractive and even allows you to play the piano.
GENE-ACTIVATED MATERIAL FOR BONE PLASTIC APPEARED IN RUSSIA
A gene-activated material for bone grafting has appeared in Russia. This development has no analogues in the world, made from octocalcium phosphate coated with circular DNA encoding the VEGF gene (vascular endothelial growth factor).
Granules serve as a matrix for the formation of bone tissue, and circular DNA enhances its blood supply and accelerates regeneration. According to the developers, the use of the new material accelerates the healing time of bone defects and makes it possible to abandon the use of grafts of the patients’ own bone tissue. This unique development will be used in the treatment of patients with injuries to the bones of the skeleton, as well as for the augmentation of bone tissue before the installation of dental implants.
ARTIFICIAL INTERVERTEBRAL DISCS COMING SOON
Pennsylvania scientists have used a combination of biodegradable synthetic materials and living cells to create a material that is as close to natural body tissue as possible. To date, artificial discs have been implanted in the cervical spine of goats. The artificial disc is filled with a synthetic gel that mimics collagen. The outer part of the disk was made from layers of polymer obtained by electrospinning. This is a method of producing polymer fibers as a result of the action of electrostatic forces on an electrically charged jet of polymer solution or melt. All of this base is populated with living stem cells that produce collagen, which must replace degradable synthetic materials. The artificial disc is soft at first, but after a few weeks it becomes more rigid and elastic thanks to the living cells that produce collagen. In the near future, scientists are going to implant discs in more animals. The observations will last for two years.
